Prerequisites: Mathematics 137, 143, 160, or 170, or similar course (i.e., college-level algebra or higher).
Textbook: Statistics: The Art and Science of Learning from Data (Second Edition) by A. Agresti & C. Franklin. ISBN: 0-13-513199-5. A copy of the textbook is on reserve in the library. An e-book version may be purchased through www.mypearsonstore.com.
Course Web Page: Refer to statistics251.wordpress.com for information concerning the course including brief summaries of lectures, recommended readings and homework problems, copies of hand-outs, answer keys, and other information. Scores and homework solutions will be available through Blackboard.
Homework: Homework problems will be recommended regularly but will not be collected/graded. Homework solutions will be made available on Blackboard.
Quizzes: There are seven quizzes. The first six quizzes will be administered in class on 9/8, 9/22, 10/6, 10/20, 11/3, and 11/17. The seventh quiz will be a take-home quiz that will be distributed after the Thanksgiving break. A calculator will be necessary for all quizzes. Make-ups for missed quizzes will only be permitted for documented university sanctioned events or in extreme circumstances. Notice of a missed quiz must be given in advance of the time of the quiz, and arrangements for make-up quizzes for foreseeable absences must be made prior to the time of the missed quiz.
Final Examination: The final examination is on Thursday, December 16th, from 10:00 to 12:00. The final examination may not be taken at another time unless, as according to university policy, you have more than two final examinations on that day.
Grading: The quizzes altogether are worth 75% of your course grade. Your lowest quiz score will be dropped when grades are determined. The remaining six quizzes are thus each worth 12.5% of your course grade. The final examination is worth the remaining 25% of your course grade (equal in weight to two quizzes). Initially grades will be assigned according to the following: A (90%-100%), B (80%-89.9%), C (70%-79.9%), D (60%-69.9%), F (less than 60%). Assignment of letter grades may be “curved” at the discretion of the instructor.
Statistics Assistance Center: The SAC is a free drop-in tutoring service for undergraduate and graduate students in statistics courses. See www.webs.uidaho.edu/statsac/index.htm for more information.
Disability Support Services Reasonable Accommodations Statement: Reasonable accommodations are available for students who have documented temporary or permanent disabilities. All accommodations must be approved through Disability Support Services located in the Idaho Commons Building, Room 306 in order to notify your instructor(s) as soon as possible regarding accommodation(s) needed for the course. Academic Honesty Statement: You are responsible for being aware of the policies of the University of Idaho concerning academic honesty (see Article II of the Student Code of Conduct). Breaches of academic honesty will not be tolerated and will result in a F for the course and referral to the Dean of Students for further disciplinary action.
